Group Coaching builds positive long-term habits

Summer newsletter story 3Social connections combined with devices and live coach support help combat metabolic syndrome and obesity.

Nothing is harder than trying to accomplish something when you feel alone. It’s not surprising that studies show that working in a group with social support improves a participant’s opportunity for success. And achieving success is particularly important for those with metabolic syndrome, an increasingly common diagnosis that affects 1 in 3 adults in the U.S. It’s also a growing issue for employers. Obesity is associated with job absenteeism, costing approximately $4.3 billion annually and with lower productivity while at work, costing employers $506 per obese worker per year.*

That’s why StayWell is focusing on metabolic syndrome and obesity as the first topics for our new Group Coaching Program: Ignite. With Ignite, participants receive the expert support and platform they need to succeed.

How it works

In this 12-week program, six to eight participants identified with either metabolic syndrome or obesity work with a StayWell health coach and accompanying devices to achieve their goals.

StayWell targets participants based on biometric data and creates a dynamic communications strategy to engage them. Participants initially have a 1:1 call with a coach and are then invited into group sessions for the remainder of the program.

This high-intensity program requires weekly participation in group discussions that feature a topic or theme along with a coaching discussion. Social support and team recognition—including overall team goals and engagement metrics—help participants meet their individual goals. In addition, participants use a scale and activity tracking device, which allows the coach to monitor their progress in Ignite’s three areas: Getting Started, Building Habits and Staying on Track.

With StayWell’s Group Coaching, participants can:

  • Select Group Coaching times that work for their schedule.
  • View and set goals for activity and weight with the help of a knowledgeable coach.
  • Message with their coach to gain support and ask questions.
  • Reply to discussions within the group coaching session.

“Losing weight with activity/weight tracking devices may become a habit for participants, teaching them how to be aware of their activity and enable them to track their progress during and after the program,” according to Amanda Bickley, StayWell Health Coach.
